BLACK HOLES THROUGH COSMIC TIME: Exploring the distant X-ray Universe with extragalactic Chandra surveys
نویسنده
چکیده
The relative areas of each field are superposed on the XBoötes image, and survey exposure times are shown. (The three fields cover separate areas, and are shown together only for comparison.) The full C-COSMOS image is shown on an expanded scale. The inset illustration shows an active galactic nucleus; the vast majority of the X-ray sources detected in Chandra surveys are AGN.

Deep Extragalactic X-ray Surveys
Deep surveys of the cosmic X-ray background are reviewed in the context of observational progress enabled by the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission-Newton. The sources found by deep surveys are described along with their redshift and luminosity distributions, and the effectiveness of such surveys at selecting active galactic nuclei (AGN) is assessed. Some key results f...

The cosmic X-ray background (XRB) is largely due to accretion onto supermassive black holes integrated over cosmic time. Thus, extragalactic X-ray surveys offer the potential to contribute substantially to our understanding of the physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) as well as the evolution of the AGN population. Such surveys have dramatically advanced over the past four years, largely due ...

متن کاملThe peak region of the extragalactic background radiation
The Cosmic X-ray background carries the information of cosmic accretion onto super-massive black holes. The intensity at its peak can be used to constrain the integrated space density of highly obscured AGNs. Determining the shape and intensity of the Cosmic X-ray background radiation represents, however, a first step towards the understanding of the population of Comptonthick AGNs. The study o...

Two X–ray observatories, the NASA observatory Chandra and the ESA mission XMM-Newton, provide powerful new diagnostics of the " hot universe ". In this article I review recent X–ray observations of the evolving universe. First indications of the warm/hot intergalactic medium, tracing out the large scale structure of the universe, have been obtained lately in sensitive Chandra and XMM-Newton hig...
